## [Smartphone Tools For The Modern Broadcast Engineer](https://blogs.telosalliance.com/smartphone-tools-for-broadcast-engineers)

I'm just going to state the obvious up-front: engineers *love* tools. We collect them, we label them, we argue about them, and we usually know *exactly* which one we need (just as we realize we don’t have it on us!).

But one of the most useful engineering tools you *already own* probably buzzed with a notification while you were reading that sentence - your smartphone.

# Don't put them off, or they might put you off the air

Every broadcast engineer tasked with the care and feeding of a transmitter site likely has a checklist of tasks to perform on a regular basis. The frequency of regular visits will depend on a variety of factors, including accessibility, proximity, time, and whatever else the universe sees fit to hurl at us on any given day.

# Looking Back on the Most Important NAB Show Ever

The 2023 NAB Show was different from any other in our industry’s history. When we all left the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2019, no one could have imagined it would be three years before we’d return. Things were starting to get back on track by 2022, but one of the most common sentiments about this year’s show was that it finally felt, for lack of a better word, “normal” again.

# TWiRT 416 - Great Sound Matters Most

What are today’s trends in FM audio processing? Is it cleaner? Less smashed? More thoughtful? Paul Kriegler, former Program Director and now Omnia’s factory rep for the US, joins us for an update on FM and streaming audio processing. Plus we delve into AES192, and how it can make a positive difference for FM signals.

# TWiRT 415 - Wrap It Up and Get Started

Chris Tobin reviews some of the best broadcast engineering info from the Central Canada Broadcast Engineers conference (CCBE). Plus, winners from the SBE 2018 Annual Membership Meeting, and RF spectrum repacking - lots of transmitter site work to make way for about 50 MHz of new mobile carrier spectrum.

# TWiRT 413 - Radio Caroline with Rob Ashard

Perhaps the best-known pirate radio station anywhere - Radio Caroline - is legendary! For many years the Ross Revenge, an Icelandic fishing trawler, has been home to Radio Caroline’s studios and transmitters, and the transmitting mast, too.  Rob Ashard and Nick Jackson join us live from the Ross Revenge, anchored off the English Coast on this episode of TWiRT.

# TWiRT 411 - RF Exposure with Stacey Moore

Safety training and certification is vital for tower workers these days. We’re discussing the RF Exposure to Humans factors that figure into overall tower worker safety. Joining us is Stacey Moore with LBA Group. We’re looking at Personal RF Exposure Monitors, physiological impacts of RF exposure, safety procedures at multi-tenant sites, and talking about exposure to the general public. Chris Tobin is here, too, for his perspective on these issues and topics.

# TWiRT 410 - Equity in Audio, and AES 2018

The Audio Engineering Society brings together a huge variety of people from every corner. There are nearly as many job descriptions as there are thousands of members. Diversity is palpable and AES member, Jill Courtney, is looking to clear remaining roadblocks for women and minorities thinking about careers in Audio and other STEM fields. Plus, David Bialik is here to update us on the array of AES sessions - so many in the Broadcast and Online Delivery track alone.

# TWiRT 409 - Circle the C-Band Wagons with Mark Johnson

Outnumbered and out-financed, broadcasters face a real threat to reliable TV & Radio satellite reception. The C-Band satellite spectrum that Radio and TV broadcasters depend on looks mighty good to some of the biggest companies in the world - mobile data carriers. Mark Johnson, Founder of LiNKUP Communications has the latest and positive steps to head this off.
