Something for Your 'pad, Man

It's safe to say that tablet computing was basically a non-starter until the iPad came around. Then, when the iPad 2 hit shelves earlier this year, things really began to take off - we recall seeing many, many engineers walking around with iPads at this year's major trade shows. Certainly, it's an outward proclamation of your inner uber-geekdom. Your Editor admits to a not-so-secret case of iPad lust, himself.

When I Was a Young Boy, I Played the Silver Ball

Usually, when we're in Las Vegas to attend NAB, the evenings are a time to rest the aching feet, perhaps throw back a libation or two, and generally relax before the next day's havoc ensues. This year, however, we got wind of one of Sin City's hidden marvels: the Pinball Hall of Fame,

Russco TurntableTurntables Built to Withstand the Apocalypse

Nearly all of us "of a certain age" in the Radio business will remember Russco turntables, founded by Modesto, California's Russ Friend in 1945. Built like the proverbial tank, Russcos, with their stepped-shaft / idler wheel drive arrangement, were standard issue in US radio stations for 40 years.

Stations, Playlists, and Charts, Oh My!

Many of us in the business grew up during the golden age of Top 40 radio, and still recall fondly the surveys, playlists and other ephemera that surround the era. Tim Warden, an IT consultant based in Tucson, has a thing for those old AM surveys as well - and has put a site up to collect and share them.

Mike Rogers of Kansas City's KCCV-FM was set to spend the bucks for a top-end processor when he heard Omnia ONE. "I was astonished... Omnia.ONE kept right up with the far more expensive unit when it came to loudness, clarity, and level management." And for about half the price, too. Looking for processing? Check out Omnia ONE - you owe it to yourself (and your bottom line).

TeslaThe Lightning Master

He discovered the rotating magnetic field. He invented polyphase alternating current. He developed a system for wireless remote control of electro-mechanical devices - in 1898! The transformer coils that bear his name created man-made lightning and could energize fluorescent lights from 25 miles away. And in 1900 he discovered terrestrial stationary waves, a fundamental part of the invention of radio. "Invention is the most important product of man's creative brain," he said in his autobiography, and to prove it he amassed over 700 patents. If you've never acquainted yourself with Tesla, PBS has a fascinating, engrossing profile online at www.pbs.org/tesla/. And now, we're off to rub some balloons against the wall...

DSL connections and Z/IP ONE codecs

John Tyler of Journal Broadcast's Milwaukee cluster writes: "I am trying to use our new Z/IP ONE IP codec for the first time. We got them up and running on the bench at the station, but when we took one codec out into the field for the first time it would connect for around 15 seconds, pass a few seconds of audio and then drop. We have a 6mbps DSL line that is dedicated to this broadcast. Do we need to assign a static IP address to our unit at the station?"
