DSL connections and Z/IP ONE codecs
John Tyler of Journal Broadcast's Milwaukee cluster writes: "I am trying to use our new Z/IP ONE IP codec for the first time. We got them up and running on the bench at the station, but when we took one codec out into the field for the first time it would connect for around 15 seconds, pass a few seconds of audio and then drop. We have a 6mbps DSL line that is dedicated to this broadcast. Do we need to assign a static IP address to our unit at the station?"

Radio in the Combat Zone
Chances are, if you've been in broadcasting a while, you've got some tales to tell. Like the time you were stuck overnight at the transmitter site during the worst storm in memory, babying the emergency genset through the night. Or the time the cops took down the crazy listener in the parking lot. Sure, we've all got 'em.

Processing and Level Management Critical when Streaming
The importance of proper processing and level management of internet streams can not be overemphasized.
Take for example a certain, highly-rated terrestrial radio station in a top 5 market whose audio stream I was fond of listening to. I say “was” because I no longer listen.
Why?

Busy? A Call Could Make All the Difference
One of the most common things that we hear today is how busy people are.
Engineers have several stations to try to manage, programmers have multiple formats to try to coordinate, and General Managers have to set aside time to listen to engineers and programmers complain about how busy they are.

SIP, RTP, NAT and your Zephyr XStream
Zephyr Xstream is the world standard for ISDN remote codecs. But it can also do IP remotes, and as ISDN circuits become harder to obtain, many stations are choosing to use their Zephyr Xstream's IP capabilities, which use industry-standard SIP and RTP to make connections over public IP networks.

You can't work in radio without finding a certain attraction to old receivers. Some of us like '70s pop-art portables, some like space-age '50s tabletops, others have a thing for early transistor sets. But there's an almost universal appreciation for the big tabletop and console radios from the '20s and '30s; sets with hand finished wooden cabinets housing big, glowing tubes.

Smartphones and Streaming: Are You Ready?
Some months ago, as you can see in the archives, I wrote a piece about the importance of making sure that your internet stream is properly processed. At the time, I mentioned that listening to internet streams for music and news is no longer a niche service embraced only by tech nerds and music freaks.

Making Adobe Audition 3.0 Play Nice with Axia's IP-Audio Driver
Trevor Stuart, engineer for Astral Radio's Virgin 104.9, Team 1260 and 100.3 The Bear in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, writes: "We recently upgraded from Adobe Audition 1.5 to Audition 3.0. Ever since we are randomly getting a 'clicking sound' when recording using the Axia IP-Audio Driver for Windows. Nothing else gets this, but nothing else on the systems is using ASIO. We are using Driver version 2.5.2.8. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated."
